Overview
Located at 16 Playground Gardens, within the old Rochelle School, Rochelle Canteen is a hidden gem in London's Shoreditch. Established in 2004 by Melanie Arnold and Margot Henderson, the restaurant occupies a former bike shed, now transformed into a minimalist dining space that opens onto a walled garden courtyard.
The menu changes daily, reflecting the best of seasonal British and European produce. Dishes are straightforward yet elegant, allowing the quality of the ingredients to shine. Past offerings have included veal brisket with pickled red cabbage and horseradish, braised rabbit with fennel and black rice, and a vegetarian plate of beetroot, white beans, rocket, and goat's curd. Desserts maintain a classic British charm, with options like poached pear with custard and praline.
The atmosphere is unpretentious and welcoming, attracting a mix of creatives, locals, and food enthusiasts. The garden seating, adorned with festoon lighting and potted plants, offers a tranquil setting for lunch or supper. The restaurant is open for lunch daily and serves supper from Wednesday to Saturday. Reservations are recommended and can be made online.
Rochelle Canteen's commitment to simplicity, seasonality, and quality has earned it a loyal following and recognition as one of London's cherished dining spots.
